Maua of Arusha

Here are some of the flowers on the grounds of our hotel in Arusha. Maua = flowers in Swahili. The last one, bottom right, is ginger – you can tell by rubbing the papery blossom and smelling the fragrance. The poinsettia are very happy here. I’ve seen them as bushes and small trees.

The orange-blossomed African Tulip Tree (haven’t captured that one yet) is amazing, and even though it’s winter, they’re in bloom along many streets in the city.

My favorite flower is one I see each morning on my walk to breakfast. Small purple blossoms with white eyes fall from a large Jacarunda tree each night, turning the grass into a carpet of ultraviolet. One of these blossoms is always waiting for me on the steps to the main house.
