¡Oye Los Angeles!

Driving in to Sherman Oaks this morning for a meeting, my first thought when I saw the hills between the San Fernando Valley & Los Angeles was: I want to stay. I’ve visited LA, and lived here for short periods. This time, we’re here for 11 months. It’s not nearly enough time, but I’m grateful for every second. Especially when driving to LA radio, some of the best in the land.

Morning Drive Playlist
6:45 AM: Tito Puente – Oye Mi Guaguanco on KJAZZ, 88.1 FM America’s Blues and Jazz Station.

7:00-ish: Bono (yes, that Bono) introducing U2’s new song, “You’re the Best Thing About Me,” on KROQ. Had to switch when the morning DJs came back on, but of Bono was entertaining, as always.

Lindsay Buckingham & Christie McVie – “On With the Show,” from their new album, on KCSN 88.5 FM, noncommercial AAA radio (so WNKU-ish) out of Cal State Northridge.

Hold on to Me – Mondo Cozmo on KCSN.

My Sister – Julianna Hatfield Three on KCSN with Nic Harcourt, the only morning DJ I like outside of John in the Morning on KEXP Seattle.

More Reasons to Visit Us in LA
I love Los Angeles when I’m driving the freeways, listening to the radio and watching palm trees and mountains go by. Or following the s-curves of Mulholland Drive as the city lights twinkle below. Meditating at a yoga studio near our home. Writing in the shade of Santa Monica Pier (free wifi).

I love Los Angeles when I’m watching the space shuttle fly low, low, low over Griffith Observatory on the back of a roaring 747 that banks so for a moment it looks like the shuttle is flying. Or when I’m throwing a ball for Dolly & Georgia at the beach. And when I’m jogging at 5:30 AM while the moon falls behind Huntington Gardens and the sun rises behind the San Gabriel Mountains.

When I’m adding “Ken’s Welcome Back for a Visit Party” to my calendar. Or getting an email from Margo, who’s looking forward to hiking or paddling together. And when I text Tara see you in 20 minutes.

When KCSN plays Mondo Cozmo, I roll my car windows down, turn off the A/C and sing.

Why you sitting on your broken-hearted hands tonight?
You wanna sing like us? You gotta rip your eyes out
Yeah, yeah, yeah
No one has ever loved you more than this
Why don’t you come and feel it out?

I can’t promise you anything
But I can tell you I’ll never leave

Hold on to me, yeah
Hold on to me, yeah
Hold on to me, yeah
Hold on to me, yeah

Why you sitting on your broken-hearted hands tonight?
You wanna run with us you gotta rip your brains out
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I have loved you for a thousand lives
What’s one more night for us to give?

I can’t promise you anything
But I can tell you I’ll never leave

Hold on to me, yeah
Hold on to me, yeah
